Your Body Is Not Impressed by Your Good Intentions – Darren Lee

There is an increasingly popular theory that the human body can be persuaded into transformation through encouragement, moderation and the occasional comfortable workout performed while listening to a podcast.

Apparently, if we walk frequently, lift weights that never cause us to make an unattractive facial expression and pedal indefinitely in Zone 2, the body will eventually reward us with greater strength, a higher functional threshold power, less body fat and the aerobic capacity of a professional athlete.

It is a lovely idea. Unfortunately, the human body has not read the marketing brochure.

The body does not change simply because we exercise. It changes when exercise presents it with a demand that exceeds its current ability and gives it a compelling reason to adapt. This principle—progressive overload—is not fashionable, new or particularly complicated. It is simply how human physiology works.

Your body is fundamentally economical. It has no interest in building additional muscle, increasing mitochondrial capacity or raising its tolerance to lactate unless circumstances suggest that doing so might be necessary. All these adaptations require energy to create and maintain. From the body’s perspective, developing extra capability that is never demanded would be like employing more staff for a shop with no customers.

To make the body change, therefore, we must occasionally disturb it.

A bodybuilder creates muscular growth by placing a muscle under increasing mechanical tension and taking a set close to the point at which another technically sound repetition is no longer possible. An endurance athlete improves aerobic capacity by spending carefully controlled periods at or above threshold, sometimes progressing towards VO₂ max. A sprinter becomes faster by sprinting at speeds that cannot be sustained for very long—which is precisely why they create an adaptation.

None of this means that every workout should end with somebody lying on the floor, staring into the distance and reconsidering their life choices. Training is not a punishment, and exhaustion is not proof of effectiveness. But it does mean that meaningful improvement requires moments when the body is asked a question it cannot answer comfortably.

Modern fitness marketing has become rather nervous about discomfort. Discomfort is difficult to sell. It demands effort, patience and progression, whereas the fitness industry would often prefer to sell convenience. Convenience renews automatically every month.

We are told that three moderate sessions a week will deliver the body we want, that lifting very light weights will “tone” muscles without the inconvenience of challenging them and that a supplement promoted by somebody standing in perfect lighting can somehow negotiate directly with our metabolism.

The influencer economy has become particularly imaginative. There now appears to be a pill, powder, tea or gummy for every human aspiration. Some products claim to increase energy; others promise to reduce appetite, improve recovery, burn fat, enhance focus and presumably reorganise the garage. The only consistently demonstrated weight-loss mechanism is often the transfer of money from the customer’s bank account.

The less glamorous truth is that physical adaptation still obeys biological rules.

Strength improves when muscles are progressively required to produce greater force. Muscle grows when sufficient fibres are recruited, challenged and fatigued. Aerobic capacity develops when the cardiovascular system is exposed to demands above those it can already handle comfortably. Anaerobic performance improves when we repeatedly—but selectively—enter the unpleasant territory where energy demand exceeds the rate at which oxygen-dependent metabolism can supply it.

This is where the current enthusiasm for Zone 2 cycling requires some perspective.

Zone 2 is excellent. It improves aerobic efficiency, mitochondrial function, fat oxidation and the ability to sustain work. It also allows athletes to accumulate training volume without creating excessive fatigue. Professional cyclists do a great deal of it because they may train for twenty or more hours each week and must manage the cumulative load.

That final point is frequently omitted when Zone 2 is presented to the general public as the complete answer.

Professional riders do not ride gently because gentle riding is the only training that works. They ride gently for much of the time because it allows them to absorb the brutally demanding sessions that also form part of their programmes. Removing the high-intensity work and copying only the easy mileage is like studying the diet of a concert pianist and expecting it to improve your piano playing.

Zone 2 builds the foundation. It does not, by itself, complete the building.

If you want to raise functional threshold power, the body must periodically experience work close to and above its existing threshold. If you want to improve VO₂ max, some training must take oxygen uptake towards its current upper limit. If you want greater anaerobic capacity, you must occasionally enter the red zone where sustainable becomes unsustainable.

You cannot become significantly better at producing high power without sometimes producing high power.

The same principle applies in resistance training. Light weights can be effective when performed for enough repetitions and taken close to muscular failure. Heavy weights can be ineffective when stopped so early that the muscles are never meaningfully challenged. The important factor is not whether a weight looks impressive; it is whether the set provides sufficient tension, recruitment and fatigue to stimulate adaptation.

“Failure,” however, needs sensible interpretation. It does not mean sacrificing technique, ignoring pain or continuing until a joint files a formal complaint. In most circumstances, technical failure—or finishing with perhaps one or two good repetitions in reserve—is enough. The objective is to challenge the muscle, not to create an entertaining video for the emergency department.

Nor does everyone need an enormous quantity of high-intensity exercise. Quite the opposite. A relatively small, accurately prescribed dose can be extremely effective.

Walking, steady cycling, mobility work and manageable resistance training should form the broad foundation of an active life. They build capacity, support recovery, increase energy expenditure and make consistent participation possible. But within that foundation there should usually be carefully selected moments of genuine challenge: perhaps one or two demanding sets in an exercise, or several properly structured intervals during a cycling session.

The dose must reflect the individual. A beginner’s red zone is not an elite athlete’s red zone. Age, training history, health, recovery, technique and confidence all matter. High intensity should be earned, introduced progressively and applied intelligently. More suffering is not automatically more science.

But zero challenge produces zero reason for the body to develop beyond its current capability.

This is the uncomfortable detail missing from many promises made by gyms and social-media fitness celebrities. People are often sold activity as though it were synonymous with progress. Activity is valuable, but progression requires more than attendance. Repeating the same comfortable stimulus eventually maintains the same comfortable level of fitness.

The solution to inactivity and obesity should not be made unnecessarily intimidating. Exercise must be accessible, inclusive and enjoyable enough to continue. But accessibility should not require dishonesty. We can welcome people into fitness gently while still explaining that, eventually, results will require progression.

A good programme contains plenty of movement that feels comfortable, some work that feels purposeful and a small amount that feels seriously difficult. The easy work creates the volume. The moderate work develops durability. The hard work provides a powerful signal for change.

Comfort keeps the body active. Challenge teaches it to become more capable.

There is room for both—and any fitness philosophy that insists we must choose between them has probably confused a training principle with a marketing campaign.
