Jag kommer tillbaka fr\u00e5n b\u00e5da!<span class=\"s1\">Hi, welcome to my blog \u2013 hopefully it will be inspiring to those of you coming back from an accident or injury.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Me?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m coming back from both!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">F\u00f6rst och fr\u00e4mst, lite bakgrund&#8230;<span class=\"s1\">First off, a little bit of background\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jag antar att jag klassas som medel\u00e5lders (46), gift med \u00e4ldre ton\u00e5rsbarn. Jag \u00e4r ganska v\u00e4ltr\u00e4nad \u2013 eller s\u00e5 var jag \u2013 och under normala tider tr\u00e4nade jag cirka fem g\u00e5nger i veckan och gick 6-7 miles om dagen. Jag har ocks\u00e5 ett ganska stillsamt jobb som grafisk formgivare s\u00e5 jag sitter MYCKET vid mitt skrivbord!<span class=\"s1\">I suppose I\u2019m classed as middle aged (46), married with older teenage children. I\u2019m fairly fit &#8211; or I was &#8211; and, in normal times, I\u2019d exercise around five times a week and walk 6-7 miles a day. I also have a fairly sedate job as a graphic designer so am sitting at my desk A LOT!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Redan 2006 var jag en ivrig n\u00e4tbollsspelare \u2013 \u00e4nda tills jag fick min v\u00e4nstra kn\u00e4sk\u00e5l att g\u00e5 ur led.  Snabbspola fram\u00e5t 13 \u00e5r, 2 hela maraton, 7 halvmaraton, miles och miles av tr\u00e4ning, ett beslut att k\u00f6pa en cocker spaniel och m\u00e5nga dislokationer och sm\u00e4rtor senare \u2013 jag fick \u00e4ntligen min operation f\u00f6r att r\u00e4tta till den planerad till mars 2020.<span class=\"s1\">Back in 2006 I was a keen netballer \u2013 right until I dislocated my left knee cap.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fast forward 13 years, 2 full marathons, 7 half marathons, miles and miles of training, a decision to purchase a cocker spaniel and many dislocations and pain later \u2013 I finally got my operation to correct it scheduled for March 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Men inf\u00f6r min operation var jag inblandad i en bakre shunt till min bil, vilket resulterade i whiplash och l\u00e4ndryggsskador.  Detta satte omedelbart stopp f\u00f6r alla gympass, min hundpromenad och, \u00e4nnu viktigare, mina \u00e4lskade inomhuscyklingspass. Sedan, precis n\u00e4r jag b\u00f6rjade k\u00e4nna att jag kunde komma tillbaka i sadeln efter bilolyckan \u2013 jag ville bygga upp musklerna i l\u00e5ren innan operationen \u2013 slog lockdown till, st\u00e4ngde gymmen och avbryter min operation!<span class=\"s1\">However, in the run up to my operation, I was involved in a rear end shunt to my car, resulting in whiplash and lower back injuries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This immediately put a stop to any gym sessions, my dog walking and, more importantly, my beloved indoor cycling sessions. Then, just as I was beginning to feel like I could get back in the saddle after the car accident &#8211; I wanted to build up the muscles in my thighs before the op &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>lockdown hit, closing the gyms and cancelling my operation!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hobblade vidare under sommaren, g\u00e5r ut med hunden och f\u00f6rs\u00f6ker h\u00e5lla mig i form (jag \u00e4r absolut INTE en utomhuscyklist s\u00e5 det h\u00e4r var borta fr\u00e5n korten), jag var bara tvungen att sitta och v\u00e4nta p\u00e5 att min kn\u00e4operation skulle bli omplanerad.   Juli kom och jag fick samtalet att operationen var ig\u00e5ng igen den 4 augusti. Men efter en omv\u00e4rdering av mina r\u00f6ntgenbilder och skanningar best\u00e4mde de att jag i st\u00e4llet f\u00f6r en relativt okomplicerad artroskopi nu beh\u00f6vde en kn\u00e4justeringsoperation \u2013 en Tibial Tubercle Osteotomi \u2013 eftersom min kn\u00e4sk\u00e5l inte l\u00e4ngre satt d\u00e4r den skulle vara i benet.<span class=\"s1\">Hobbling on through the summer, walking the dog and trying to keep myself fit (I\u2019m most definitely NOT an outdoor cyclist so this was off the cards), I just had to sit and wait for my knee operation to be rescheduled. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>July came and I received the call that the operation was back on for 4<\/span><span class=\"s1\">August. But on re-evaluation of my x-rays and scans, they decided that rather than a relatively straightforward arthroscopy, I now needed knee re-alignment surgery \u2013 a Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy \u2013 as my knee cap was no longer sitting where it should be in my leg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Denna procedur inneb\u00e4r att bryta den \u00f6vre delen av mitt smalben, flytta den \u00f6ver och ner f\u00f6r att flytta senan som sedan skulle dra tillbaka kn\u00e4sk\u00e5len p\u00e5 plats och fixera den med skruvar.  Tillsammans med detta hade jag ocks\u00e5 en partiell medial patellofemoral ligamentrekonstruktion, vilket i princip inneb\u00e4r att de drog ligamentet l\u00e4ngst ner p\u00e5 mitt l\u00e5r \u00f6ver f\u00f6r att h\u00e5lla kn\u00e4sk\u00e5len p\u00e5 plats d\u00e4r den h\u00f6r hemma eftersom ligamentet med tiden str\u00e4ckts ut f\u00f6r att rymma kn\u00e4sk\u00e5lens wonky position.<span class=\"s1\">This procedure involves breaking the top part of my shin, moving it across and down to move the tendon that would then pull the kneecap back into place, and fixing it with screws.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Along with this, I also had a partial m<\/span><span class=\"s3\">edial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, which basically means they pulled the ligament at the bottom of my thigh over to hold the kneecap in place where it belongs as, over time, the ligament had stretched to accommodate the wonky position of the knee cap. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ja, allt \u00e4r s\u00e5 vidrigt som det l\u00e5ter!<span class=\"s3\">Ye<\/span><span class=\"s1\">s, it\u2019s all as vile as it sounds!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jag skrevs ut fr\u00e5n sjukhuset i en hel benst\u00f6d som, eftersom jag inte \u00e4r beg\u00e5vad med Elle McPherson-ben, str\u00e4ckt fr\u00e5n h\u00f6ft till fotled, l\u00e5st i rak position och kryckor.<span class=\"s1\">I was discharged from hospital in a full leg brace which, given I\u2019m not gifted with Elle McPherson legs, stretched from hip to ankle, locked in a straight position and crutches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jag har aldrig k\u00e4nt s\u00e5n sm\u00e4rta!  Utan huvudet p\u00e5 sm\u00e4rtstillande, tillbringade jag st\u00f6rre delen av den f\u00f6rsta veckan hemma med att gr\u00e5ta och sova \u2013 utan att veta om jag n\u00e5gonsin skulle b\u00f6ja benet igen, \u00e4n mindre s\u00e4tta mig p\u00e5 en cykel igen. Men efter en veckas gr\u00e5t och synd om mig sj\u00e4lv, fick jag huvudet p\u00e5 att den b\u00e4sta personen att hj\u00e4lpa mig var jag sj\u00e4lv!<span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve never felt pain like it!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Off my head on painkillers, I spent most of the first week home crying and sleeping \u2013 never knowing if I\u2019d ever bend my leg again, let alone get back on a bike. B<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ut after a week of crying and feeling sorry for myself, I got my head around the fact that the best person to help me was myself!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Att bli uppmuntrad att l\u00e4gga sig ner och dra foten upp och ner i s\u00e4ngen f\u00f6r att b\u00f6ja kn\u00e4et \u00e4r sj\u00e4lsf\u00f6rst\u00f6rande \u2013 t\u00e4nk att ha deltagit i inomhuscykling och l\u00f6pning maraton under de senaste 12 \u00e5ren, f\u00f6r att bara kunna b\u00f6ja benet till 10 grader&#8230; Jag trodde aldrig f\u00f6r en sekund att jag skulle vara tillbaka p\u00e5 cykeln inom 6 m\u00e5nader, f\u00f6r varken av benet och beh\u00e5n kunde jag ligga ner ordentligt. (som jag var tvungen att ha p\u00e5 mig 24 timmar om dygnet!), min ryggskada fr\u00e5n bilolyckan b\u00f6rjade ocks\u00e5 spela upp \u2013 tack och lov f\u00f6r kodein!<span class=\"s1\">Being encouraged to lie down and drag your foot up and down the bed to bend your knee is soul destroying \u2013 imagine having taken part in indoor cycling and running marathons for the last 12 years, to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>only be able to bend your leg to 10 degrees\u2026 I never thought for one second I\u2019d be back on the bike within 6 months &#8211; and given I couldn\u2019t lie down properly either because of the cumbersome leg brace (which I had to wear 24 hours a day!), my back injury from the car accident also started to play up &#8211; thank goodness for codeine!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Physio var l\u00e5ngsam \u2013 och om det inte hade varit f\u00f6r min privata fysioterapeut, vem vet i vilket stadium jag skulle vara just nu \u2013 men hon uppmuntrade mig att b\u00f6rja anv\u00e4nda gymutrustning (f\u00f6rsiktigt) igen och en v\u00e4n l\u00e5nade mig en gammal tr\u00e4ningscykel f\u00f6r att f\u00e5 tillbaka r\u00f6relsen i mitt kn\u00e4.  Det var vid det h\u00e4r laget visste jag att jag ville vara tillbaka i sadeln ordentligt s\u00e5 fort jag kunde! Min konsult (vid 4 m\u00e5nader) l\u00e4t mig g\u00f6ra pilates- och yogapass f\u00f6r att st\u00e4rka min k\u00e4rna men avskr\u00e4ckte utfall, kn\u00e4b\u00f6j och allt f\u00f6r viktb\u00e4rande.<span class=\"s1\">Physio was slow \u2013 and if it hadn\u2019t been for my private physio, who knows what stage I\u2019d be at right now &#8211; but she encouraged me to start using gym equipment (gently) again and a friend lent me an old exercise bike to get the movement back in my knee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was at this point I knew I wanted to be back in the saddle properly as quickly as I could! My consultant (at 4 months) allowed me to do pilates and yoga sessions to strengthen my core but discouraged lunges, squats and anything too weight bearing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Vid det h\u00e4r laget hade jag fortfarande n\u00e4stan inga muskler i mitt l\u00e5r och mina ben s\u00e5g s\u00e5 konstiga ut \u2013 skillnaden i mina l\u00e5rmuskler var rolig \u2013 den ena s\u00e5g ut som den tillh\u00f6rde mig, den andra s\u00e5g ut som den tillh\u00f6rde en 100 \u00e5r gammal dam \u2013 men jag var fast besluten och h\u00e5rt arbete fick mig till den punkt att jag k\u00e4nde att jag skulle klara av ett l\u00e4tt inomhuscykelpass \u2013 men med vem som var st\u00e4ngd p\u00e5 gymmet och igen?<span class=\"s1\">At this point I still had next to no muscle in my thigh and my legs looked so odd &#8211; the difference in my thigh muscles was hilarious &#8211; one looked like it<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>belonged to me, the other looked like it belonged on a 100 year old lady &#8211; but I<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0was determined though, and hard work got me to the point that I felt I could manage a light indoor cycling session again \u2013 but with who and how to take part when the gyms were still closed? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">F\u00f6rst och fr\u00e4mst beh\u00f6vde jag en cykel, \u00e5tminstone med ett viktat hjul. Goda gamla Groupon och deras ih\u00e4rdiga e-postmeddelanden till unds\u00e4ttning. Efter att ha deltagit i Darrens klasser (grundare av CicloZone) under \u00e5ren, hade jag sett CicloZone-uppdateringar dyka upp p\u00e5 mitt Facebook-nyhetsfl\u00f6de och blev fascinerad&#8230; kan det h\u00e4r vara svaret jag letade efter? H\u00e4r \u00e4r jag, och jag ser fram emot att dela mina erfarenheter med dig under de kommande veckorna. Jag \u00e4r mer \u00e4n redo att komma (tillbaka) in i zonen&#8230;!<span class=\"s1\">First off, I needed a bike, with a weighted wheel at least. Good old Groupon and their persistent emails to the rescue. Having been a participant in Darren\u2019s classes (founder of CicloZone) over the years, I\u2019d seen CicloZone updates appear on my Facebook news feed and was intrigued\u2026 could this be the answer I was looking for? Well here I am, and I&#8217;m looking forward to sharing my experiences with you over the coming weeks.
