Hopelijk zal het inspirerend zijn voor degenen onder jullie die terugkomen van een ongeval of blessure.  Mij?  Ik kom terug van beide!<span class=\"s1\">Hi, welcome to my blog \u2013 hopefully it will be inspiring to those of you coming back from an accident or injury.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Me?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m coming back from both!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Eerst even wat achtergrondinformatie\u2026<span class=\"s1\">First off, a little bit of background\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ik veronderstel dat ik van middelbare leeftijd ben (46), getrouwd en oudere tienerkinderen heb. Ik ben redelijk fit \u2013 of dat was ik \u2013 en in normale tijden trainde ik ongeveer vijf keer per week en liep ik 10 tot 11 kilometer per dag. Ik heb ook een redelijk rustige baan als grafisch ontwerper, dus ik zit VEEL aan mijn bureau!<span class=\"s1\">I suppose I\u2019m classed as middle aged (46), married with older teenage children. I\u2019m fairly fit &#8211; or I was &#8211; and, in normal times, I\u2019d exercise around five times a week and walk 6-7 miles a day. I also have a fairly sedate job as a graphic designer so am sitting at my desk A LOT!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In 2006 was ik een fanatiek korfbalspeler, totdat ik mijn linkerknieschijf ontwrichtte.  Snel vooruit 13 jaar, 2 volledige marathons, 7 halve marathons, kilometerslange training, een beslissing om een cocker-spani\u00ebl aan te schaffen en vele ontwrichtingen en pijn later \u2013 ik kreeg eindelijk mijn operatie om het te corrigeren gepland voor maart 2020.<span class=\"s1\">Back in 2006 I was a keen netballer \u2013 right until I dislocated my left knee cap.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fast forward 13 years, 2 full marathons, 7 half marathons, miles and miles of training, a decision to purchase a cocker spaniel and many dislocations and pain later \u2013 I finally got my operation to correct it scheduled for March 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In de aanloop naar mijn operatie was ik echter betrokken bij een achterwaartse shunt naar mijn auto, met als gevolg een whiplash en letsel aan de onderrug.  Dit maakte meteen een einde aan alle gymsessies, het uitlaten van mijn hond en, nog belangrijker, mijn geliefde indoor cycling-sessies. Toen, net toen ik het gevoel begon te krijgen dat ik na het auto-ongeluk weer in het zadel kon kruipen \u2013 ik wilde de spieren in mijn dijen opbouwen v\u00f3\u00f3r de operatie \u2013 werd de lockdown getroffen, werden de sportscholen gesloten en werd mijn operatie geannuleerd!<span class=\"s1\">However, in the run up to my operation, I was involved in a rear end shunt to my car, resulting in whiplash and lower back injuries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This immediately put a stop to any gym sessions, my dog walking and, more importantly, my beloved indoor cycling sessions. Then, just as I was beginning to feel like I could get back in the saddle after the car accident &#8211; I wanted to build up the muscles in my thighs before the op &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>lockdown hit, closing the gyms and cancelling my operation!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Terwijl ik de zomer door hobbelde, de hond uitliet en mezelf fit probeerde te houden (ik ben absoluut geen buitenfietser, dus dit kon niet), moest ik gewoon zitten wachten tot mijn knieoperatie opnieuw gepland zou worden.   Het werd juli en ik kreeg het telefoontje dat de operatie op 4 augustus weer doorging. Maar bij herevaluatie van mijn r\u00f6ntgenfoto&#8217;s en scans besloten ze dat ik nu, in plaats van een relatief eenvoudige artroscopie, een operatie voor het opnieuw uitlijnen van de knie nodig had \u2013 een tibiale tuberculose-osteotomie \u2013 omdat mijn knieschijf niet langer op de plek zat waar hij zou moeten zitten in mijn been.<span class=\"s1\">Hobbling on through the summer, walking the dog and trying to keep myself fit (I\u2019m most definitely NOT an outdoor cyclist so this was off the cards), I just had to sit and wait for my knee operation to be rescheduled. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>July came and I received the call that the operation was back on for 4<\/span><span class=\"s1\">August. But on re-evaluation of my x-rays and scans, they decided that rather than a relatively straightforward arthroscopy, I now needed knee re-alignment surgery \u2013 a Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy \u2013 as my knee cap was no longer sitting where it should be in my leg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Deze procedure omvat het breken van het bovenste deel van mijn scheenbeen, het heen en weer bewegen om de pees te bewegen die vervolgens de knieschijf weer op zijn plaats zou trekken, en het vastzetten met schroeven.  Daarnaast heb ik ook een gedeeltelijke reconstructie van het mediale patellofemorale ligament ondergaan, wat in feite betekent dat ze het ligament aan de onderkant van mijn dij naar voren hebben getrokken om de knieschijf op zijn plaats te houden waar hij hoort, omdat het ligament in de loop van de tijd was uitgerekt om tegemoet te komen aan de wankele positie van de knieschijf.<span class=\"s1\">This procedure involves breaking the top part of my shin, moving it across and down to move the tendon that would then pull the kneecap back into place, and fixing it with screws.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Along with this, I also had a partial m<\/span><span class=\"s3\">edial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, which basically means they pulled the ligament at the bottom of my thigh over to hold the kneecap in place where it belongs as, over time, the ligament had stretched to accommodate the wonky position of the knee cap. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ja, het is allemaal zo gemeen als het klinkt!<span class=\"s3\">Ye<\/span><span class=\"s1\">s, it\u2019s all as vile as it sounds!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ik werd uit het ziekenhuis ontslagen met een volledige beenbrace die, aangezien ik niet begaafd ben met Elle McPherson-benen, gestrekt van heup tot enkel, vastgezet in een rechte positie en krukken.<span class=\"s1\">I was discharged from hospital in a full leg brace which, given I\u2019m not gifted with Elle McPherson legs, stretched from hip to ankle, locked in a straight position and crutches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ik heb nog nooit zoveel pijn gevoeld!  Zonder pijnstillers bracht ik het grootste deel van de eerste week thuis huilend en slapend door, nooit wetende of ik ooit nog mijn been zou buigen, laat staan \u200b\u200bweer op de fiets zou stappen. Maar na een week huilen en medelijden met mezelf hebben, besefte ik dat ikzelf de beste persoon was om mij te helpen!<span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve never felt pain like it!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Off my head on painkillers, I spent most of the first week home crying and sleeping \u2013 never knowing if I\u2019d ever bend my leg again, let alone get back on a bike. B<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ut after a week of crying and feeling sorry for myself, I got my head around the fact that the best person to help me was myself!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Aangemoedigd worden om te gaan liggen en je voet op en neer te slepen in bed om je knie te buigen is zielvernietigend \u2013 stel je voor dat je de afgelopen 12 jaar hebt deelgenomen aan indoor cycling en marathons lopen, om je been slechts 10 graden te kunnen buigen\u2026 Ik had nooit gedacht dat ik binnen 6 maanden weer op de fiets zou zitten \u2013 en aangezien ik ook niet goed kon gaan liggen vanwege de omslachtige beenbrace (die ik 24 uur per dag moest dragen!), mijn rugblessure door het auto-ongeluk ook begon te spelen \u2013 godzijdank voor code\u00efne!<span class=\"s1\">Being encouraged to lie down and drag your foot up and down the bed to bend your knee is soul destroying \u2013 imagine having taken part in indoor cycling and running marathons for the last 12 years, to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>only be able to bend your leg to 10 degrees\u2026 I never thought for one second I\u2019d be back on the bike within 6 months &#8211; and given I couldn\u2019t lie down properly either because of the cumbersome leg brace (which I had to wear 24 hours a day!), my back injury from the car accident also started to play up &#8211; thank goodness for codeine!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fysio was traag \u2013 en als mijn priv\u00e9fysio er niet was geweest, wie weet in welk stadium ik nu zou zijn \u2013 maar ze moedigde me aan om weer (voorzichtig) fitnessapparatuur te gaan gebruiken en een vriendin leende me een oude hometrainer om de beweging terug in mijn knie te krijgen.  Op dit punt wist ik dat ik zo snel mogelijk weer goed in het zadel wilde zitten! Mijn adviseur (na 4 maanden) stond me toe pilates- en yogasessies te doen om mijn kern te versterken, maar ontmoedigde lunges, squats en alles wat te belastend was.<span class=\"s1\">Physio was slow \u2013 and if it hadn\u2019t been for my private physio, who knows what stage I\u2019d be at right now &#8211; but she encouraged me to start using gym equipment (gently) again and a friend lent me an old exercise bike to get the movement back in my knee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was at this point I knew I wanted to be back in the saddle properly as quickly as I could! My consultant (at 4 months) allowed me to do pilates and yoga sessions to strengthen my core but discouraged lunges, squats and anything too weight bearing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Op dat moment had ik nog steeds zo goed als geen spieren in mijn dijbeen en zagen mijn benen er zo vreemd uit \u2013 het verschil in mijn dijspieren was hilarisch \u2013 de ene zag eruit alsof hij van mij was, de andere zag eruit alsof hij van een 100-jarige dame was \u2013 maar ik was echter vastbesloten en door hard werken kwam ik op het punt dat ik het gevoel had dat ik weer een lichte indoor cycling-sessie aankon \u2013 maar met wie en hoe moest ik meedoen als de sportscholen nog gesloten waren?<span class=\"s1\">At this point I still had next to no muscle in my thigh and my legs looked so odd &#8211; the difference in my thigh muscles was hilarious &#8211; one looked like it<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>belonged to me, the other looked like it belonged on a 100 year old lady &#8211; but I<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0was determined though, and hard work got me to the point that I felt I could manage a light indoor cycling session again \u2013 but with who and how to take part when the gyms were still closed? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ten eerste had ik een fiets nodig, met tenminste een verzwaard wiel. Goede oude Groupon en hun aanhoudende e-mails te hulp. Omdat ik door de jaren heen deelnam aan de lessen van Darren (oprichter van CicloZone), zag ik updates van CicloZone verschijnen op mijn Facebook-nieuwsfeed en was ik ge\u00efntrigeerd&#8230; zou dit het antwoord kunnen zijn waar ik naar op zoek was? Nou, hier ben ik dan, en ik kijk ernaar uit om de komende weken mijn ervaringen met jullie te delen. Ik ben er nu meer dan klaar voor om (terug) de zone in te gaan\u2026!<span class=\"s1\">First off, I needed a bike, with a weighted wheel at least. Good old Groupon and their persistent emails to the rescue. Having been a participant in Darren\u2019s classes (founder of CicloZone) over the years, I\u2019d seen CicloZone updates appear on my Facebook news feed and was intrigued\u2026 could this be the answer I was looking for? Well here I am, and I&#8217;m looking forward to sharing my experiences with you over the coming weeks.
