Moi?  Je reviens des deux !<span class=\"s1\">Hi, welcome to my blog \u2013 hopefully it will be inspiring to those of you coming back from an accident or injury.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Me?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m coming back from both!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Tout d\u2019abord, un peu de contexte\u2026<span class=\"s1\">First off, a little bit of background\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Je suppose que je suis class\u00e9 comme \u00e9tant d\u2019\u00e2ge moyen (46 ans), mari\u00e9 et p\u00e8re d\u2019adolescents plus \u00e2g\u00e9s. Je suis assez en forme \u2013 ou je l\u2019\u00e9tais \u2013 et, en temps normal, je faisais de l\u2019exercice environ cinq fois par semaine et je marchais 6 \u00e0 7 miles par jour. J&rsquo;ai aussi un travail assez calme en tant que graphiste, donc je suis BEAUCOUP assis \u00e0 mon bureau\u00a0!<span class=\"s1\">I suppose I\u2019m classed as middle aged (46), married with older teenage children. I\u2019m fairly fit &#8211; or I was &#8211; and, in normal times, I\u2019d exercise around five times a week and walk 6-7 miles a day. I also have a fairly sedate job as a graphic designer so am sitting at my desk A LOT!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">En 2006, j&rsquo;\u00e9tais un fervent joueur de netball \u2013 jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que je me luxe la rotule gauche.  13 ans plus tard, 2 marathons complets, 7 semi-marathons, des kilom\u00e8tres et des kilom\u00e8tres d&rsquo;entra\u00eenement, la d\u00e9cision d&rsquo;acheter un cocker et de nombreuses luxations et douleurs plus tard \u2013 j&rsquo;ai finalement subi mon op\u00e9ration pour le corriger, pr\u00e9vue pour mars 2020.<span class=\"s1\">Back in 2006 I was a keen netballer \u2013 right until I dislocated my left knee cap.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fast forward 13 years, 2 full marathons, 7 half marathons, miles and miles of training, a decision to purchase a cocker spaniel and many dislocations and pain later \u2013 I finally got my operation to correct it scheduled for March 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cependant, avant mon op\u00e9ration, j&rsquo;ai \u00e9t\u00e9 impliqu\u00e9 dans un choc arri\u00e8re vers ma voiture, ce qui a entra\u00een\u00e9 un coup du lapin et des blessures au bas du dos.  Cela a imm\u00e9diatement mis un terme \u00e0 toutes les s\u00e9ances de gym, \u00e0 la promenade de mon chien et, plus important encore, \u00e0 mes bien-aim\u00e9es s\u00e9ances de v\u00e9lo en salle. Puis, alors que je commen\u00e7ais \u00e0 sentir que je pouvais me remettre en selle apr\u00e8s l\u2019accident de voiture \u2013 je voulais muscler mes cuisses avant l\u2019op\u00e9ration \u2013 le confinement est arriv\u00e9, la fermeture des salles de sport et l\u2019annulation de mon op\u00e9ration !<span class=\"s1\">However, in the run up to my operation, I was involved in a rear end shunt to my car, resulting in whiplash and lower back injuries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This immediately put a stop to any gym sessions, my dog walking and, more importantly, my beloved indoor cycling sessions. Then, just as I was beginning to feel like I could get back in the saddle after the car accident &#8211; I wanted to build up the muscles in my thighs before the op &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>lockdown hit, closing the gyms and cancelling my operation!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">En clopinant tout l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9, en promenant le chien et en essayant de rester en forme (je ne suis certainement PAS un cycliste de plein air, donc ce n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas envisageable), j&rsquo;ai juste d\u00fb m&rsquo;asseoir et attendre que mon op\u00e9ration du genou soit report\u00e9e.   Juillet est arriv\u00e9 et j&rsquo;ai re\u00e7u un appel m&rsquo;informant que l&rsquo;op\u00e9ration reprenait pour le 4 ao\u00fbt. Mais apr\u00e8s avoir r\u00e9\u00e9valu\u00e9 mes radiographies et mes scanners, ils ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 qu&rsquo;au lieu d&rsquo;une arthroscopie relativement simple, j&rsquo;avais maintenant besoin d&rsquo;une op\u00e9ration de r\u00e9alignement du genou \u2013 une ost\u00e9otomie de la tuberculose tibiale \u2013 car ma rotule n&rsquo;\u00e9tait plus assise l\u00e0 o\u00f9 elle devrait \u00eatre dans ma jambe.<span class=\"s1\">Hobbling on through the summer, walking the dog and trying to keep myself fit (I\u2019m most definitely NOT an outdoor cyclist so this was off the cards), I just had to sit and wait for my knee operation to be rescheduled. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>July came and I received the call that the operation was back on for 4<\/span><span class=\"s1\">August. But on re-evaluation of my x-rays and scans, they decided that rather than a relatively straightforward arthroscopy, I now needed knee re-alignment surgery \u2013 a Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy \u2013 as my knee cap was no longer sitting where it should be in my leg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cette proc\u00e9dure consiste \u00e0 casser la partie sup\u00e9rieure de mon tibia, \u00e0 la d\u00e9placer de haut en bas pour d\u00e9placer le tendon qui remettrait ensuite la rotule en place et \u00e0 la fixer avec des vis.  Parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 cela, j&rsquo;ai \u00e9galement subi une reconstruction partielle du ligament f\u00e9moro-patellaire m\u00e9dial, ce qui signifie essentiellement qu&rsquo;ils ont tir\u00e9 le ligament au bas de ma cuisse pour maintenir la rotule en place l\u00e0 o\u00f9 elle doit \u00eatre car, au fil du temps, le ligament s&rsquo;\u00e9tait \u00e9tir\u00e9 pour s&rsquo;adapter \u00e0 la position bancale de la rotule.<span class=\"s1\">This procedure involves breaking the top part of my shin, moving it across and down to move the tendon that would then pull the kneecap back into place, and fixing it with screws.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Along with this, I also had a partial m<\/span><span class=\"s3\">edial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, which basically means they pulled the ligament at the bottom of my thigh over to hold the kneecap in place where it belongs as, over time, the ligament had stretched to accommodate the wonky position of the knee cap. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Oui, c\u2019est aussi ignoble que \u00e7a en a l\u2019air !<span class=\"s3\">Ye<\/span><span class=\"s1\">s, it\u2019s all as vile as it sounds!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Je suis sorti de l&rsquo;h\u00f4pital avec une attelle de jambe compl\u00e8te qui, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 que je ne suis pas dou\u00e9 avec les jambes d&rsquo;Elle McPherson, \u00e9tir\u00e9es de la hanche \u00e0 la cheville, verrouill\u00e9es en position droite et avec des b\u00e9quilles.<span class=\"s1\">I was discharged from hospital in a full leg brace which, given I\u2019m not gifted with Elle McPherson legs, stretched from hip to ankle, locked in a straight position and crutches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Je n&rsquo;ai jamais ressenti une telle douleur !  N&rsquo;ayant plus pris d&rsquo;analg\u00e9siques, j&rsquo;ai pass\u00e9 la majeure partie de la premi\u00e8re semaine \u00e0 la maison \u00e0 pleurer et \u00e0 dormir \u2013 sans savoir si je plierais \u00e0 nouveau la jambe, et encore moins si je remonterais sur un v\u00e9lo. Mais apr\u00e8s une semaine \u00e0 pleurer et \u00e0 m\u2019apitoyer sur mon sort, j\u2019ai compris que la meilleure personne pour m\u2019aider \u00e9tait moi-m\u00eame\u00a0!<span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve never felt pain like it!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Off my head on painkillers, I spent most of the first week home crying and sleeping \u2013 never knowing if I\u2019d ever bend my leg again, let alone get back on a bike. B<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ut after a week of crying and feeling sorry for myself, I got my head around the fact that the best person to help me was myself!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00catre encourag\u00e9 \u00e0 s&rsquo;allonger et \u00e0 tra\u00eener son pied de haut en bas du lit pour plier le genou est destructeur pour l&rsquo;\u00e2me \u2013 imaginez avoir particip\u00e9 au cyclisme en salle et \u00e0 la course \u00e0 pied au cours des 12 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, pour ne pouvoir plier la jambe qu&rsquo;\u00e0 10 degr\u00e9s\u2026 Je n&rsquo;ai jamais pens\u00e9 une seconde que je serais de retour sur le v\u00e9lo dans les 6 mois \u2013 et \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 que je ne pouvais pas non plus m&rsquo;allonger correctement \u00e0 cause de l&rsquo;attelle de jambe encombrante (que je devais porter 24 heures sur 24 !), ma blessure au dos suite \u00e0 l&rsquo;accident de voiture a \u00e9galement commenc\u00e9. pour jouer \u2013 Dieu merci, il y a la cod\u00e9ine !<span class=\"s1\">Being encouraged to lie down and drag your foot up and down the bed to bend your knee is soul destroying \u2013 imagine having taken part in indoor cycling and running marathons for the last 12 years, to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>only be able to bend your leg to 10 degrees\u2026 I never thought for one second I\u2019d be back on the bike within 6 months &#8211; and given I couldn\u2019t lie down properly either because of the cumbersome leg brace (which I had to wear 24 hours a day!), my back injury from the car accident also started to play up &#8211; thank goodness for codeine!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">La physio \u00e9tait lente \u2013 et sans ma physio priv\u00e9e, qui sait \u00e0 quel stade j&rsquo;en serais en ce moment \u2013 \u200b\u200bmais elle m&rsquo;a encourag\u00e9 \u00e0 recommencer \u00e0 utiliser les \u00e9quipements de gym (en douceur) et une amie m&rsquo;a pr\u00eat\u00e9 un vieux v\u00e9lo d&rsquo;appartement pour retrouver le mouvement de mon genou.  C\u2019est \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 que j\u2019ai su que je voulais me remettre en selle correctement le plus vite possible ! Mon consultant (\u00e0 4 mois) m&rsquo;a permis de faire des s\u00e9ances de Pilates et de yoga pour renforcer mon tronc mais m&rsquo;a d\u00e9conseill\u00e9 les fentes, les squats et tout ce qui mettait trop de poids.<span class=\"s1\">Physio was slow \u2013 and if it hadn\u2019t been for my private physio, who knows what stage I\u2019d be at right now &#8211; but she encouraged me to start using gym equipment (gently) again and a friend lent me an old exercise bike to get the movement back in my knee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was at this point I knew I wanted to be back in the saddle properly as quickly as I could! My consultant (at 4 months) allowed me to do pilates and yoga sessions to strengthen my core but discouraged lunges, squats and anything too weight bearing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00c0 ce moment-l\u00e0, je n\u2019avais encore presque aucun muscle dans ma cuisse et mes jambes avaient l\u2019air si bizarres \u2013 la diff\u00e9rence dans les muscles de mes cuisses \u00e9tait hilarante \u2013 l\u2019un semblait m\u2019appartenir, l\u2019autre semblait appartenir \u00e0 une dame de 100 ans \u2013 mais j\u2019\u00e9tais d\u00e9termin\u00e9, et le travail acharn\u00e9 m\u2019a amen\u00e9 au point que j\u2019ai senti que je pouvais \u00e0 nouveau organiser une s\u00e9ance l\u00e9g\u00e8re de cyclisme en salle \u2013 mais avec qui et comment participer quand les salles de sport \u00e9taient encore ferm\u00e9es ?<span class=\"s1\">At this point I still had next to no muscle in my thigh and my legs looked so odd &#8211; the difference in my thigh muscles was hilarious &#8211; one looked like it<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>belonged to me, the other looked like it belonged on a 100 year old lady &#8211; but I<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0was determined though, and hard work got me to the point that I felt I could manage a light indoor cycling session again \u2013 but with who and how to take part when the gyms were still closed? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Tout d\u2019abord, j\u2019avais besoin d\u2019un v\u00e9lo, avec au moins une roue lest\u00e9e. Bon vieux Groupon et leurs mails persistants \u00e0 la rescousse. Ayant particip\u00e9 aux cours de Darren (fondateur de CicloZone) au fil des ann\u00e9es, j&rsquo;avais vu des mises \u00e0 jour de CicloZone appara\u00eetre sur mon fil d&rsquo;actualit\u00e9 Facebook et j&rsquo;\u00e9tais intrigu\u00e9\u2026 serait-ce la r\u00e9ponse que je cherchais ? Eh bien me voici et j&rsquo;ai h\u00e2te de partager mes exp\u00e9riences avec vous au cours des prochaines semaines. Je suis plus que pr\u00eat maintenant \u00e0 (revenir) dans la zone\u2026 !<span class=\"s1\">First off, I needed a bike, with a weighted wheel at least. Good old Groupon and their persistent emails to the rescue. Having been a participant in Darren\u2019s classes (founder of CicloZone) over the years, I\u2019d seen CicloZone updates appear on my Facebook news feed and was intrigued\u2026 could this be the answer I was looking for? Well here I am, and I&rsquo;m looking forward to sharing my experiences with you over the coming weeks.
