Espero que sea inspirador para aquellos que regresan de un accidente o lesi\u00f3n.  \u00bfA m\u00ed?  \u00a1Vuelvo de ambos!<span class=\"s1\">Hi, welcome to my blog \u2013 hopefully it will be inspiring to those of you coming back from an accident or injury.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Me?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m coming back from both!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Primero que nada, un poco de historia&#8230;<span class=\"s1\">First off, a little bit of background\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Supongo que estoy clasificado como de mediana edad (46 a\u00f1os), casado y con hijos adolescentes mayores. Estoy bastante en forma (o lo estaba) y, en tiempos normales, hac\u00eda ejercicio unas cinco veces por semana y caminaba entre 6 y 7 millas por d\u00eda. Tambi\u00e9n tengo un trabajo bastante tranquilo como dise\u00f1ador gr\u00e1fico, \u00a1as\u00ed que estoy sentado MUCHO en mi escritorio!<span class=\"s1\">I suppose I\u2019m classed as middle aged (46), married with older teenage children. I\u2019m fairly fit &#8211; or I was &#8211; and, in normal times, I\u2019d exercise around five times a week and walk 6-7 miles a day. I also have a fairly sedate job as a graphic designer so am sitting at my desk A LOT!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">En 2006 era un entusiasta jugador de netball, hasta que me disloqu\u00e9 la r\u00f3tula izquierda.  Avance r\u00e1pido 13 a\u00f1os, 2 maratones completos, 7 medios maratones, kil\u00f3metros y kil\u00f3metros de entrenamiento, la decisi\u00f3n de comprar un cocker spaniel y muchas dislocaciones y dolores despu\u00e9s; finalmente consegu\u00ed que mi operaci\u00f3n para corregirlo estuviera programada para marzo de 2020.<span class=\"s1\">Back in 2006 I was a keen netballer \u2013 right until I dislocated my left knee cap.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fast forward 13 years, 2 full marathons, 7 half marathons, miles and miles of training, a decision to purchase a cocker spaniel and many dislocations and pain later \u2013 I finally got my operation to correct it scheduled for March 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sin embargo, en el per\u00edodo previo a mi operaci\u00f3n, estuve involucrado en una derivaci\u00f3n trasera de mi autom\u00f3vil, lo que result\u00f3 en un latigazo cervical y lesiones en la espalda baja. Luego, justo cuando empezaba a sentir que pod\u00eda volver a montar despu\u00e9s del accidente automovil\u00edstico, quer\u00eda fortalecer los m\u00fasculos de mis muslos antes de que llegara el bloqueo, cerrando los gimnasios y cancelando mi operaci\u00f3n.<span class=\"s1\">However, in the run up to my operation, I was involved in a rear end shunt to my car, resulting in whiplash and lower back injuries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This immediately put a stop to any gym sessions, my dog walking and, more importantly, my beloved indoor cycling sessions. Then, just as I was beginning to feel like I could get back in the saddle after the car accident &#8211; I wanted to build up the muscles in my thighs before the op &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>lockdown hit, closing the gyms and cancelling my operation!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cojeando durante el verano, paseando al perro y tratando de mantenerme en forma (definitivamente NO soy un ciclista al aire libre, as\u00ed que esto estaba descartado), solo tuve que sentarme y esperar a que reprogramaran mi operaci\u00f3n de rodilla.   Lleg\u00f3 julio y recib\u00ed la llamada de que la operaci\u00f3n se reanudaba para el 4 de agosto. Pero al reevaluar mis radiograf\u00edas y exploraciones, decidieron que en lugar de una artroscopia relativamente sencilla, ahora necesitaba una cirug\u00eda de realineaci\u00f3n de la rodilla (una osteotom\u00eda del tub\u00e9rculo tibial) ya que la r\u00f3tula ya no estaba donde deber\u00eda estar en mi pierna.<span class=\"s1\">Hobbling on through the summer, walking the dog and trying to keep myself fit (I\u2019m most definitely NOT an outdoor cyclist so this was off the cards), I just had to sit and wait for my knee operation to be rescheduled. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>July came and I received the call that the operation was back on for 4<\/span><span class=\"s1\">August. But on re-evaluation of my x-rays and scans, they decided that rather than a relatively straightforward arthroscopy, I now needed knee re-alignment surgery \u2013 a Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy \u2013 as my knee cap was no longer sitting where it should be in my leg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Este procedimiento implica romper la parte superior de mi espinilla, moverla hacia arriba y hacia abajo para mover el tend\u00f3n que luego colocar\u00eda la r\u00f3tula en su lugar y fijarla con tornillos.  Adem\u00e1s de esto, tambi\u00e9n me hicieron una reconstrucci\u00f3n parcial del ligamento femororrotuliano medial, lo que b\u00e1sicamente significa que tiraron del ligamento en la parte inferior de mi muslo para mantener la r\u00f3tula en su lugar, ya que, con el tiempo, el ligamento se hab\u00eda estirado para adaptarse a la posici\u00f3n torcida de la r\u00f3tula.<span class=\"s1\">This procedure involves breaking the top part of my shin, moving it across and down to move the tendon that would then pull the kneecap back into place, and fixing it with screws.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Along with this, I also had a partial m<\/span><span class=\"s3\">edial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, which basically means they pulled the ligament at the bottom of my thigh over to hold the kneecap in place where it belongs as, over time, the ligament had stretched to accommodate the wonky position of the knee cap. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a1S\u00ed, todo es tan vil como parece!<span class=\"s3\">Ye<\/span><span class=\"s1\">s, it\u2019s all as vile as it sounds!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Me dieron de alta del hospital con un aparato ortop\u00e9dico completo en la pierna que, dado que no tengo el don de las piernas de Elle McPherson, se estiraba desde la cadera hasta el tobillo, se fijaba en posici\u00f3n recta y se usaban muletas.<span class=\"s1\">I was discharged from hospital in a full leg brace which, given I\u2019m not gifted with Elle McPherson legs, stretched from hip to ankle, locked in a straight position and crutches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a1Nunca hab\u00eda sentido un dolor as\u00ed!  Sin tomar analg\u00e9sicos, pas\u00e9 la mayor parte de la primera semana en casa llorando y durmiendo, sin saber si alguna vez volver\u00eda a doblar la pierna, y mucho menos volver a montar en bicicleta. Pero despu\u00e9s de una semana de llorar y sentir pena por m\u00ed mismo, entend\u00ed el hecho de que la mejor persona para ayudarme era yo mismo.<span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve never felt pain like it!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Off my head on painkillers, I spent most of the first week home crying and sleeping \u2013 never knowing if I\u2019d ever bend my leg again, let alone get back on a bike. B<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ut after a week of crying and feeling sorry for myself, I got my head around the fact that the best person to help me was myself!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Que te animen a acostarte y arrastrar el pie arriba y abajo de la cama para doblar la rodilla es destructivo para el alma. Imag\u00ednate haber participado en ciclismo indoor y correr maratones durante los \u00faltimos 12 a\u00f1os, para poder doblar la pierna solo 10 grados&#8230; Nunca pens\u00e9 ni por un segundo que volver\u00eda a subirme a la bicicleta en 6 meses, y dado que tampoco pod\u00eda acostarme adecuadamente debido a la inc\u00f3moda abrazadera para la pierna (\u00a1que ten\u00eda que usar las 24 horas del d\u00eda!), a mi lesi\u00f3n en la espalda por el accidente automovil\u00edstico. Tambi\u00e9n empez\u00f3 a aparecer \u2013 \u00a1gracias a Dios por la code\u00edna!<span class=\"s1\">Being encouraged to lie down and drag your foot up and down the bed to bend your knee is soul destroying \u2013 imagine having taken part in indoor cycling and running marathons for the last 12 years, to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>only be able to bend your leg to 10 degrees\u2026 I never thought for one second I\u2019d be back on the bike within 6 months &#8211; and given I couldn\u2019t lie down properly either because of the cumbersome leg brace (which I had to wear 24 hours a day!), my back injury from the car accident also started to play up &#8211; thank goodness for codeine!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">La fisioterapia fue lenta, y si no hubiera sido por mi fisio privada, qui\u00e9n sabe en qu\u00e9 etapa estar\u00eda ahora, pero ella me anim\u00f3 a empezar a usar equipos de gimnasio (con suavidad) nuevamente y una amiga me prest\u00f3 una vieja bicicleta est\u00e1tica para recuperar el movimiento de mi rodilla.  \u00a1Fue en ese momento que supe que quer\u00eda volver a montar correctamente lo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido posible! Mi consultor (a los 4 meses) me permiti\u00f3 hacer sesiones de pilates y yoga para fortalecer mi n\u00facleo, pero me desaconsej\u00f3 hacer estocadas, sentadillas y cualquier cosa que exigiera soportar peso.<span class=\"s1\">Physio was slow \u2013 and if it hadn\u2019t been for my private physio, who knows what stage I\u2019d be at right now &#8211; but she encouraged me to start using gym equipment (gently) again and a friend lent me an old exercise bike to get the movement back in my knee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was at this point I knew I wanted to be back in the saddle properly as quickly as I could! My consultant (at 4 months) allowed me to do pilates and yoga sessions to strengthen my core but discouraged lunges, squats and anything too weight bearing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">En ese momento todav\u00eda no ten\u00eda casi ning\u00fan m\u00fasculo en el muslo y mis piernas se ve\u00edan muy extra\u00f1as \u2013 la diferencia en los m\u00fasculos de mis muslos era divertid\u00edsima \u2013 uno parec\u00eda pertenecer a m\u00ed, el otro parec\u00eda pertenecer a una se\u00f1ora de 100 a\u00f1os \u2013 pero estaba decidido, y el trabajo duro me llev\u00f3 al punto en que sent\u00ed que pod\u00eda realizar una sesi\u00f3n ligera de ciclismo en interiores nuevamente, pero \u00bfcon qui\u00e9n y c\u00f3mo participar cuando los gimnasios todav\u00eda estaban cerrados?<span class=\"s1\">At this point I still had next to no muscle in my thigh and my legs looked so odd &#8211; the difference in my thigh muscles was hilarious &#8211; one looked like it<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>belonged to me, the other looked like it belonged on a 100 year old lady &#8211; but I<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0was determined though, and hard work got me to the point that I felt I could manage a light indoor cycling session again \u2013 but with who and how to take part when the gyms were still closed? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">En primer lugar, necesitaba una bicicleta, al menos con una rueda con peso. El bueno de Groupon y sus persistentes correos electr\u00f3nicos al rescate. Despu\u00e9s de haber participado en las clases de Darren (fundador de CicloZone) a lo largo de los a\u00f1os, hab\u00eda visto aparecer actualizaciones de CicloZone en mi servicio de noticias de Facebook y estaba intrigado&#8230; \u00bfpodr\u00eda ser esta la respuesta que estaba buscando? Bueno, aqu\u00ed estoy y espero poder compartir mis experiencias con ustedes durante las pr\u00f3ximas semanas. \u00a1Estoy m\u00e1s que listo ahora para regresar a la zona&#8230;!<span class=\"s1\">First off, I needed a bike, with a weighted wheel at least. Good old Groupon and their persistent emails to the rescue. Having been a participant in Darren\u2019s classes (founder of CicloZone) over the years, I\u2019d seen CicloZone updates appear on my Facebook news feed and was intrigued\u2026 could this be the answer I was looking for? Well here I am, and I&#8217;m looking forward to sharing my experiences with you over the coming weeks.
